SheetWhiz AI: What It Does, and the Best Alternatives for Model Building
Updated July 2026 · 5 minute read
SheetWhiz — the popular Excel-shortcuts extension for Google Sheets — has launched its AI features. If you're evaluating it, the useful question isn't "does it have AI?" but "what does the AI actually do?" Here's an honest look at what SheetWhiz AI ships today, where it's a strong fit, and the alternatives if what you need is AI that builds and edits financial models.
What SheetWhiz AI does
SheetWhiz AI is built around auditing: multi-level formula tracing with AI explanations that understand what kind of model you're in (an LBO, a budget), step-by-step formula evaluation, and plain breakdowns of complex functions like VLOOKUP, INDEX/MATCH, and LET. Their own framing is a good summary: generate the work, then "inspect it, understand it, and verify it" — SheetWhiz handles the verification phase.
That sits on top of SheetWhiz's established strengths: trace precedents/dependents, auto-coloring to visualize structure, 100+ shortcuts and formatting tools, and image export to Slides. If your week is spent reviewing and presenting models others (or an AI) built, it's a mature, well-regarded choice.
What it doesn't do
By its own positioning, SheetWhiz AI reviews what's already in your spreadsheet. It doesn't generate models, write formulas across a sheet, or apply formatting from a plain-English instruction. If your bottleneck is building — standing up a budget or DCF, rolling a model forward, restructuring a messy sheet — an auditing AI doesn't shorten that work. You need a generative tool for the "generate the work" step.
Alternatives, by job to be done
1. SheetDog — AI that builds and edits the model
SheetDog is the closest like-for-like alternative: a Chrome extension for finance with Excel-style shortcuts, formula tracing, and format cycles — but its AI, powered by Anthropic's Claude, is generative. In production since early 2026:
- Build DCFs, three-statement models, LBOs, comps, revenue and cohort models, and budgets from a single prompt — tabs, formulas, and formatting included
- Plain-English targeted edits: "add a YoY growth row below revenue", "highlight hardcodes vs formulas"
- AI-explained formula tracing — the same auditing job SheetWhiz AI does, with recursive precedent-tree explanations
- Spreadsheet data goes directly from your browser to Anthropic — never touches SheetDog servers
- Excel-style shortcuts are free and work without an account; AI is $18/month or $199/year with a 21-day free trial, no card
Best for: anyone whose week is spent building and maintaining models, not just reviewing them. See the full SheetDog vs SheetWhiz comparison.
2. RizzCalc — template-driven AI modeling
A Google Workspace add-on with a library of pre-built model templates (DCF, LBO, budgets) plus natural-language prompting. Best if you prefer starting from established templates over generating structure from scratch, and prefer the Workspace add-on install pattern over a Chrome extension.
3. Gemini in Sheets — the free baseline
Included with Google Workspace at no extra cost. Good for anomaly detection, summaries, and the =AI() function. Not built for finance-specific structure — it won't produce a properly-formatted three-statement model or follow your firm's formatting conventions — but it's the right starting point if your needs are light and your budget is zero.
How to choose
| If you want… | Pick |
|---|---|
| AI auditing and tracing on models you already have, plus Slides | SheetWhiz |
| AI that builds and edits models, plus Excel shortcuts | SheetDog |
| Template-first model generation | RizzCalc |
| Free, general-purpose AI assistance | Gemini in Sheets |
Worth saying plainly: build-then-verify is a workflow, not a rivalry. Plenty of finance teams will use a generative tool to build and an auditing tool to check. The mistake is expecting either kind of AI to do the other's job.
